Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see through the eye of a military photographer? To be in the action and see all the chaos and destruction! I wouldnt call myself a military photographer because when I was in the Marines in 1996-2000 there wasnt much going on in Iraq and anywhere else for that matter. We had an alert one time and that was when things were beginning to get a little shady with Saddam again! We were packing up our gear getting ready to go and then we got the call that said everything was clear. Our advanced party went in ahead of us. We went to Kuwait a couple of months later.
Kuwait is a whole different world. We were getting off the plane and noticed that the heat was phenomenol. When we arrived at our base camp we noticed that it was different. I thought right away to take pictures of everything I came across. I didnt have a great camera, in fact I think it was just one of those cheap film cameras. I took quite a bit of pictures to document our excercise. We even came across some wildlife while we were there. From Camels to Camel Spiders they all were there and interesting.
I must say that Kuwait seems like a beautiful country and I wish I could have been there more to experience it but I think two or three weeks was all we were there for. It has been almost eight years since I have been out now but I wonder how the military photographers do it. Do they have that as their MOS (JOB) or is that is just something they are assigned to do.
If you are or know a military photographer can you please let me know their experiences. I can imagine it must be hard to be there in harms way and having to document it all. God Bless you! Semper Fi!
